What Is This Craft? 🎨

This is a super fun paper plate character craft where kids turn a plain paper plate into the face of everyone’s favorite Jedi: Luke Skywalker! Using paint, construction paper, markers, and a free printable template, you cut and assemble the pieces to create Luke’s face complete with his signature sandy blond hair and that iconic smile.

It’s a low-mess, low-cost craft that works great for Star Wars Day on May the 4th, birthday parties, rainy day fun, school projects, or just because your kid won’t stop quoting The Force Awakens. (No judgment, been there.)

Why You’ll Love This Idea ❤️

First, it’s budget-friendly. You only need a paper plate, paint, construction paper, glue, and markers. Most of this stuff is already in your craft bin, you know? The free printable template takes all the guesswork out of cutting the right shapes. No artistic skills required, which is great news for those of us whose sketches look more like Jabba the Hutt than Luke Skywalker.

Second, it’s genuinely quick. You can knock this out in under 30 minutes once the paint dries. It’s the kind of craft that feels special without eating up your whole afternoon. Plus, the finished product looks SO cute displayed on the fridge or wall. Your kids will be so proud, and honestly, so will you. 👏

Why This Project Is Great for Kids 👦👧

This craft is perfect for a wide range of ages. Toddlers can help with painting and gluing while older kids can trace and cut the template pieces themselves. It’s a great way to build fine motor skills without it feeling like work. Kids are so much more motivated when the end result is their favorite character!

Furthermore, it sparks creative play. After the craft is done, kids love using their Luke Skywalker plate as a prop for imaginative play or Star Wars storytelling. You can make a whole galaxy of paper plate characters — add Darth Vader, R2-D2, or Princess Leia to the mix for even more fun. It’s a simple kids’ activity that keeps giving long after the glue dries.

How to Make the Luke Skywalker Paper Plate Craft 🌟

Follow these easy step-by-step instructions and you’ll have a Jedi ready to hang on the wall in no time!

  1. Paint the paper plate peach and set it aside to dry completely. This is a great step to do first so you can prep the other pieces while you wait.
  2. Print and cut out the free template. Then trace the face shape onto the dried paper plate and cut it out.
  3. Trace the hair template onto yellow or light brown construction paper and cut it out. Next, cut the ear shapes from the leftover painted paper plate scraps.
  4. Attach the hair by sliding the paper plate face into the opening in the middle of the hair piece. Glue the hair to both the front and back of the plate so it stays secure.
  5. Glue the eyes onto the face using the template as a guide. After that, glue the ears on each side of the plate.
  6. Draw a smile with a black marker. Then use the white marker to add little highlight dots to each eye for that cute, bright look. That’s it — your Luke is done! 🎉

How to Use This Craft 🌠

Once you’ve finished your paper plate character, there are so many fun ways to use it! Here are some ideas:

  • Wall or door decoration — tape or hang it up in a bedroom, playroom, or classroom for a Star Wars-themed display.
  • May the 4th party decor — string several characters together for a fun garland banner.
  • Birthday party activity — set it up as a craft station so party guests can make and take their own.
  • Classroom craft — teachers love this for themed weeks, reading units, or just a fun Friday activity.
  • Puppet show prop — attach a stick and let kids act out their favorite Star Wars scenes.
  • Gift topper or card — glue a small version to a gift tag or card for a Star Wars fan.
  • Storytime companion — use the plate character while reading Star Wars picture books aloud with your kids.

Fun Variations to Try 💡

Want to switch things up? Here are a few ideas to take this craft in a new direction:

  • Make a whole Star Wars crew — use the same paper plate technique to create Darth Vader, Princess Leia, C-3PO, or Yoda. Great for a Star Wars birthday party craft table!
  • Add a lightsaber — cut a long green or blue strip of construction paper and glue it to the back of the plate so it sticks out like Luke is holding it.
  • Use foam plates instead of paper plates for extra sturdiness, especially if younger kids will be playing with the finished craft.
  • Turn it into a puppet — tape a craft stick or popsicle stick to the back and let the kids put on a Jedi show.
  • Use watercolor paint instead of regular paint for a softer, more artistic look on the face.
  • Make mini versions using small snack-sized plates for a cute garland or mobile.

Common Questions About This Craft ❓

What age is this craft good for?

This craft works well for kids ages 3 and up. Younger toddlers will need more help with cutting and tracing, but they can totally join in on the painting and gluing. Older kids, say ages 6 and up, can handle most of it independently. It’s a great craft for mixed-age groups, like siblings working together.

Can I do this craft without the printable template?

Yes! You can freehand the shapes if you prefer. That said, the free template makes things so much easier and more consistent, especially if you’re making multiples for a party or classroom. It’s designed to fit a standard paper plate, so it just works.

What kind of paint works best on a paper plate?

Regular acrylic craft paint works great and dries quickly. Tempera paint is another solid option, especially if you’re crafting with younger kids since it washes off hands and clothing more easily. Avoid watercolor for this step, as it can warp the plate.

How long does this craft take to make?

Active crafting time is about 20–30 minutes. The only wait is for the paint to dry, which takes about 15–20 minutes. You can speed that up with a hair dryer on low! Overall, plan for about 45 minutes start to finish.

Is this good for a Star Wars party?

Absolutely! This is one of the best Star Wars kids’ party activities because it doubles as a craft and a party favor. Set up a little craft station with all the supplies and let kids assemble their own Luke Skywalker to take home. You can also pre-paint the plates ahead of time to save time at the party.
