Grab the free printable template and let’s get started!

What Is This Craft? 🎨
This is an easy, adorable paper plate character craft that turns a plain paper plate into the face of everyone’s favorite Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi! Using peach paint, brown and black construction paper, a marker, and a free printable template, kids assemble his signature hair, beard, ears, and eyes step by step. The template takes all the hard work off your plate — pun absolutely intended.
This Star Wars paper plate craft is perfect for May the 4th celebrations, themed birthday parties, classroom activities, or any afternoon that needs a little Jedi magic. You know those days when the kids are restless and you need a quick win? This is that win. ✨

Why You’ll Love This Idea ❤️
For starters, this craft is wonderfully budget-friendly. A paper plate, some peach paint, brown and black construction paper, and a marker — that’s really all it takes. Chances are good that most of those supplies are already in your craft bin right now. The free printable template makes the whole thing even more manageable, especially since it’s sized to fit a standard paper plate perfectly. No freehand guessing, no wasted paper.
Beyond the budget, the finished result is genuinely charming. 😍 Obi-Wan’s warm, wise face is so recognizable that even a paper plate version gets an immediate reaction. Kids absolutely love seeing a character they know come to life from supplies they helped put together. As a mom of two, I live for that proud little face when a craft turns out great. This one delivers every time.

Why This Project Is Great for Kids 👦👧
This craft is a great fit for a wide age range. Younger kids, around 3 to 5, can jump right in on painting, gluing, and placing the pieces. Older kids, 6 and up, can handle the tracing and cutting independently, which gives them a real sense of ownership over the finished product. Either way, every kid ends up with something they’re genuinely excited about.
In addition, this Jedi-themed kids’ craft quietly builds fine motor skills through cutting, gluing small pieces, and drawing facial details. It feels like pure fun, but there’s a lot of great hand-eye coordination happening behind the scenes. Once it’s finished, kids love using it for imaginative Star Wars play — storytelling, puppet shows, you name it. It’s a simple activity with a surprisingly long shelf life. 🚀

How to Make the Obi Wan Kenobi Paper Plate Craft ✨
Follow these simple steps and your very own Jedi Master will be ready to display in no time!
- Paint the paper plate peach and set it aside to dry fully. While it dries, go ahead and print the free template so all your pieces are ready to cut.
- Once the plate is completely dry, trace the face shape template onto the plate and cut it out. This forms Obi-Wan’s rounded head.
- Trace all the remaining template pieces onto the correct construction paper colors — hair and beard pieces on brown paper, eye and detail pieces on black paper. Then cut each one out carefully.
- Glue the hair, beard, and ear pieces onto the plate first, using the template as a placement guide. Take your time with the beard placement — it really makes the character!
- Next, attach the eyes using glue. Once the eyes are secure, add a small white marker dot to each eye for a bright highlight effect.
- Finally, use the black marker to draw on Obi-Wan’s smile. Add any additional facial details you’d like with the marker. There he is — your very own wise Jedi Master! 🎉

Fun Variations to Try 💡
Want to mix things up a bit? Here are some fun ways to put your own spin on this craft:
- Build out the whole Jedi Council — pair Obi-Wan with Luke Skywalker and Yoda plates using the same paper plate technique for a full Star Wars character lineup.
- Make an older Ben Kenobi version — use white hair and beard pieces to recreate his older look from the original saga.
- Try foam plates for extra durability, especially if younger kids plan to use the finished piece during active play.
- Turn it into a puppet — attach a large craft stick to the back and let kids use it for Jedi storytelling and puppet shows.
- Set up a full Star Wars party craft table — offer Obi-Wan, Darth Maul, Han Solo, and Boba Fett as character options so every guest gets to pick their favorite (find all of these tutorials below).
- String several characters together into a party garland — punch a hole at the top of each plate, thread ribbon through, and hang across a doorway or mantle.
- Make mini versions on snack-sized plates for a fun bulletin board display or classroom decoration.

Common Questions About This Craft ❓
What age is this craft best for?
This craft is a great fit for kids ages 3 and up. Younger toddlers will need help with tracing and cutting, but they can fully participate in painting and gluing pieces onto the plate. Kids 6 and older can manage most steps independently. It also works really well for mixed-age sibling pairs, where older kids can take the lead and help little ones along.
Do I need the printable template to make this?
You can definitely go freehand if that’s your style! That said, the free template is proportioned specifically to fit a standard paper plate, so everything lines up neatly without any guesswork. It’s especially helpful when you’re making several at once for a party or classroom, since all the pieces stay consistent from plate to plate.
What type of paint works best on paper plates?
Acrylic craft paint is the top pick here because it dries fast and gives solid, even coverage. Tempera paint is also a wonderful option for younger kids since it washes off hands and clothing much more easily. Steer clear of watercolor paint for this step — it tends to soak into the plate and cause warping rather than laying flat.
How long does this craft take from start to finish?
Plan for about 40 to 50 minutes total. Active crafting takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes, and the remainder is paint drying time. Speeding up drying with a hair dryer on low works like a charm. After that, assembly comes together nice and quickly!
Is this a good craft for a Star Wars birthday party?
It’s one of the best party craft options out there! Pre-paint all the plates the night before so they’re fully dry and ready. Then set out pre-cut template pieces, glue, and markers at the party table so guests can assemble their own Obi-Wan to take home. Craft activity plus party favor, all in one — the Jedi Council would approve. 🎉
