May the Fourth be with you — and also with your craft table! If your kid is obsessed with Star Wars, you are going to love this one. It’s quick, it’s cute, and it uses stuff you probably already have at home. Grab a paper plate and let’s get our droid on. 🚀

What Is This R2-D2 Paper Plate Craft?
This is a simple DIY paper plate craft that turns an everyday paper plate into everyone’s favorite little astromech droid — R2-D2! Using a free printable template, some construction paper, and a little paint, your kids will end up with an adorable handmade R2D2 they’ll want to display (or fly around the living room making beeping sounds).
It’s a great Star Wars kids craft for May the Fourth, a Star Wars birthday party activity, or just a random Tuesday when you need something fun to do. No fancy supplies. No art degree required. Just some basic materials and a little imagination.

Why You’ll Love This Idea
Okay, real talk — as a busy mom, I need crafts that don’t take 45 minutes of prep and a trip to three different stores. This one checks all the boxes. Most of the supplies are things you already have at home, and the whole project comes together in under an hour. The free printable template does most of the heavy lifting, so you’re not out here trying to freehand a robot. You know what I mean?
Plus, this craft is genuinely impressive-looking for how simple it is. Your kids will feel SO proud of what they made. Stick it on the fridge, hang it in their room, or bring it to the Star Wars party — it holds up. And honestly? It makes a great rainy day activity craft that doesn’t end in glitter everywhere. That alone is a win. 🏆

Why This Project Is Great for Crafting with Kids
Paper plate crafts are a classic for a reason — they’re sturdy, easy to work with, and kids of all ages can participate. This one works well for preschoolers all the way up to elementary-age kids. Younger ones can do the gluing while older kids handle the cutting and tracing. Everyone gets a job. Everyone feels included. (And you get five whole minutes of quiet. You’re welcome.) 😄
This is also a great fine motor skills activity. Cutting, tracing, and gluing all help build those small muscle skills kids need for writing and school. So it’s not just fun — it’s sneaky educational. The best kind of craft, you know? And because we’re using a free printable template, there’s less frustration and more creativity.

Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Prep the paper plate. Cut the bottom curved part off the paper plate to create a flat bottom edge for R2-D2’s body. Then paint the top dome portion gray or silver. Let it dry completely before moving on.
- Print and cut the template. Print your free R2-D2 printable template and cut out all the pieces. Trace the circle shape onto black construction paper and trace the remaining shapes onto blue construction paper.
- Glue on the main pieces. Attach the large blue panel piece to the center of the paper plate body. Then glue the round black circle on top — that’s R2-D2’s main eye! Press everything flat and let the glue set.
- Add the finishing details. Glue the blue strip across the bottom of the plate. Then glue the small rectangle pieces along the top edge of that strip. These little details are what really make it look like R2-D2!
- Use your white paint marker to add any extra details — lines, circles, buttons — to make your R2-D2 unique. Then let everything dry. Done! Your little droid is ready to roll. 🤖

How to Use This Craft
Once your R2D2 is complete, the fun doesn’t have to stop! Here are some great ways to use it:
- May the Fourth party decor — Hang them on the wall or use them as table centerpieces for a Star Wars celebration.
- Birthday party activity — Set up a craft station at a Star Wars birthday party so kids can make their own to take home.

- Gift wrap topper — Attach a mini version to a Star Wars gift for an extra-special personal touch.

Fun Variations to Try 🎨
Want to mix things up a little? Here are some fun ways to customize your paper plate R2D2 craft:
- Glitter it up — Add some silver glitter paint to make R2D2 look extra shiny and metallic. Kids go absolutely wild for glitter.
- Make a whole crew — Use the same technique to create a BB-8 paper plate craft or even a Darth Vader version! Turn it into a Star Wars character craft set. I’ve got more Star Wars paper plate craft ideas at the bottom of the post.
- Add googly eyes — Swap out the black paper circle for a googly eye to give R2-D2 some extra personality.
- Party favor size — Use smaller plates or bowls to create mini versions for Star Wars party favors or goodie bag decorations.
- Add stickers — Let kids decorate with metallic or star stickers to personalize their R2-D2.

Common Questions About This Craft
What age is this craft good for?
This craft works well for kids ages 3-4 and up. Younger children will need help with cutting, but they can do the gluing and painting with supervision. Older kids can handle most of it on their own — which means you might actually get to drink your coffee while it’s hot. ☕
Can I do this without the free template?
Technically yes, but the free printable template makes it SO much easier. It takes the guesswork out of sizing and shaping the pieces, so the finished craft looks polished even if your kiddo is still working on their scissor skills.
What kind of paint works best on a paper plate?
Regular acrylic craft paint or a gray/silver paint marker works great. Avoid using too much water with the paint, since paper plates can warp if they get too wet. A paint marker is actually the easiest option for younger kids — less mess, more control.
