Okay, hear me out. Darth Maul is genuinely one of the coolest-looking characters in all of Star Wars — and kids absolutely know it. That red and black face, those horns, those eyes? Pure villain drama. The great news is that you can recreate all of that on a paper plate, with a free printable template, in about 45 minutes. No Sith training required. 😄

What Is This Craft? 🎨

This is a fun, beginner-friendly paper plate character craft that transforms a plain paper plate into the iconic face of Darth Maul! Using red paint, black and red construction paper, white eye circles, and a free printable template, kids can build his dramatic face piece by piece — horns, tattoo markings, eyes, and all. The template handles all the tricky shapes so you don’t have to.

This craft is a natural fit for Star Wars Day on May the 4th, Star Wars birthday parties, school craft projects, or any afternoon when your mini Jedi (or mini Sith, honestly) needs something exciting to do. You know those days when the kids have declared they have nothing to do approximately twelve times before noon? This is your answer. 🔴

Why You’ll Love This Idea ❤️

First of all, this craft uses supplies you most likely already have at home. Red paint, a paper plate, some construction paper, glue, and a marker — that’s basically it. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive. The free printable template is sized to fit a standard paper plate perfectly, which means less measuring, less guessing, and way less frustration for everyone at the table.

On top of that, the result looks seriously impressive. 😱 Darth Maul’s face is so recognizable that even a simple paper plate version gets a wow reaction every time. Your kids will be SO proud to show it off, and you’ll be the cool mom who made it happen with a paper plate and a little paint. The dark side never looked this cute.

Why This Project Is Great for Kids 👦👧

This craft spans a great range of ages. Younger kids, around 3 to 5, can help with painting, gluing, and sticking on the eye pieces. Older kids, 6 and up, can handle the tracing and cutting mostly on their own. Either way, the steps are clear and satisfying, and everyone ends up with something they’re genuinely proud of.

Furthermore, this Star Wars paper craft sneaks in some great fine motor skill practice. Folding the horns, gluing small pieces, and drawing the facial markings all build hand coordination in a way that feels like play rather than practice. After the craft is finished, kids immediately want to use it for imaginative storytelling — suddenly your kitchen is the Jedi Council Chamber. It’s a simple kids’ activity with a long, playful life. 🚀

How to Make the Darth Maul Paper Plate Craft 🔴

Follow these easy steps and your Sith Lord will be ready for display in no time!

  1. Paint the paper plate red and set it aside to dry fully. This is a great time to print out the free template and get your other supplies organized.
  2. Once the plate is dry, trace the face shape template onto the plate and cut it out. This gives you Darth Maul’s rounded head shape.
  3. Trace all the remaining template pieces onto their matching construction paper colors — black pieces on black paper, red pieces on red paper, white circles on white paper, and so on. Then cut them all out carefully.
  4. Attach the black template pieces to the bottom of the paper plate on both sides. These create the dark chin and jaw markings that are so distinctive to Darth Maul’s look.
  5. Fold the horn pieces in half lengthwise to give them a 3D shape, then glue them to the top of the paper plate. Space them out evenly so they look just right.
  6. Glue the white eye circles onto the red eye circles first, then attach the assembled eyes onto the face.
  7. Finally, use the black marker to draw on the nose and mouth shapes. Add any additional facial tattoo details you’d like for extra drama. Step back and admire your very own Sith Lord! 🎉

Creative Ways to Use This Craft 🌠

Once your Sith Lord is all assembled, here are some fun ways to put it to good use:

  • Bedroom or playroom wall art — hang Darth Maul alongside other Star Wars paper plate characters for a seriously cool gallery wall (I have free templates for a bunch of characters at the end of the post).
  • May the 4th party decor — line up the whole Star Wars crew as a festive display or centerpiece.
  • Birthday party craft table — let guests make their own to take home as a party favor keepsake.
  • Classroom activity — great for a Star Wars-themed reading unit, free choice Friday, or a fun end-of-week craft.
  • Halloween costume prop or mask — make a large wearable version for an easy and impressive costume addition.
  • Puppet or play prop — attach a craft stick to the back for galactic storytelling adventures.
  • Gift wrap decoration — attach a mini version to the top of a wrapped gift for any Star Wars fan on your list.

Fun Variations to Try 💡

Feeling extra creative? Here are some great ways to remix this craft:

  • Build out the dark side — pair Darth Maul with a Darth Vader paper plate using the same basic technique for a full villain lineup. Perfect for a Star Wars party display.
  • Go wearable — use a larger paper plate, cut out eye holes, and add an elastic band so kids can wear it as a Darth Maul mask for Halloween or imaginative play.
  • Add a double-sided lightsaber — cut a long red strip of construction paper and attach it to the back of the plate so it peeks out from behind.
  • Use foam plates instead of paper plates for extra sturdiness, especially for younger kids who plan to use it during playtime.
  • Set up a full Star Wars craft party station — let guests choose between Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker plates for a mix-and-match character experience.
  • Make tiny versions on snack-sized plates for a fun bulletin board or garland display.

Common Questions About This Craft ❓

What age is this craft best for?

This craft works well for kids ages 3 and up. Toddlers will need help with tracing and cutting, but they can fully participate in painting and gluing the pieces on. Kids 6 and older can handle most of the steps with minimal help. It’s also a great option for mixed-age groups, since older kids can assist younger ones with the trickier steps.

Do I need the printable template to make this?

You can definitely freehand it if you want to! However, the free template is sized to fit a standard paper plate exactly, which makes the whole process much smoother. It’s especially handy when you’re making multiples for a party or classroom, since everything lines up consistently every time.

What paint works best on paper plates?

Acrylic craft paint is the go-to choice here. It dries quickly, covers well, and gives a solid, vibrant color. Tempera paint is also a great option — especially for younger kids — since it’s much easier to clean up from hands and clothes. Avoid watercolor paint for this step, as it tends to warp and buckle the plate rather than laying flat.

How long does this craft take from start to finish?

Plan for about 40 to 50 minutes total. Active crafting takes around 25 to 30 minutes, and the rest is paint drying time. To speed things up, use a hair dryer on low — the Force is strong with that trick. After that, assembly moves pretty quickly!

Is this a good Star Wars birthday party craft?

Absolutely yes! Pre-paint all your plates red the night before the party so they’re dry and ready to go. Then set up a craft station with all the pre-cut template pieces, glue, and markers. Guests can assemble their own Darth Maul and take it home as a party favor. It’s a built-in activity and keepsake in one — total party win. 🎉
