Make an adorable Chewbacca Paper Plate Craft with a free printable template! This Star Wars activity for kids takes under 30 minutes with supplies you have.

If your kid is obsessed with Star Wars — or honestly, if you are — this craft is calling your name. It’s simple, it’s adorable, and it takes less than 30 minutes. Plus, you probably already have most of the supplies at home. Win!

What Is a Chewbacca Paper Plate Craft?
This is a fun, easy DIY project where you turn a plain paper plate into Chewie himself. Using brown paint, construction paper, and a free printable template, you build out his iconic face — shaggy fur, big eyes, and that goofy open mouth with a tongue sticking out. It’s part art project, part Star Wars fan moment, and 100% kid-approved. 🎨

Why You’ll Love This Idea
First of all, the supply list is refreshingly short. You need a paper plate, brown paint, construction paper in white, black, tan, and pink, scissors, and glue. That’s it. No special tools, no craft store run required (you know how those trips go — you walk in for one thing and walk out spending $47).
Beyond that, this project is just fun. Whether you’re planning a Star Wars birthday party, celebrating May the Fourth, or just need a quiet afternoon activity, this craft delivers big on cute with very little effort. It’s the kind of simple kids’ craft that actually looks good when it’s done.

Why This Project Is Great for Kids 🧒
Paper plate crafts are perfect for little hands. The pieces are easy to cut, the glue is forgiving, and there’s no pressure to be perfect — because guess what, Chewbacca’s fur is supposed to look a little wild. That means even your youngest crafter gets a win here. It’s also a great fine motor skills activity without feeling like homework.
This craft works beautifully as a group activity too. Think classroom Star Wars day, a birthday party craft table, or a playdate project. Kids can each make their own version and compare — because no two Chewies will look exactly alike, and that’s the magic of it. This is the kind of easy craft for kids that makes memories without making a huge mess.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Paint the plate. Start by painting your paper plate brown. While the paint is still wet, cut sharp triangle shapes along the bottom edge to create that signature shaggy Chewie fur look. Then set it aside and let it dry completely.

Step 2: Cut out your template pieces. Print your template and trace each piece onto the correct color of construction paper. Use tan for the hair pieces, black for the eye circles and mouth background, white for the inner eye circles and mouth accent pieces, and pink for the tongue.

Step 3: Add the hair. Once your painted plate is dry, glue the tan hair pieces around the top and sides of the plate. This creates Chewie’s fluffy mane. Press firmly and let the glue set.

Step 4: Build the eyes and mouth. Next, assemble the face details. Glue the white mouth pieces and pink tongue onto the black mouth background. Then layer the white eye circles on top of the black eye circles.

Step 5: Attach the face. Finally, glue the eyes onto the plate, then glue the mouth below them. Give everything a good press and let it dry. Step back and admire your very own Wookie! 🎉

Common Questions About This Craft
Do I need a special template for this project?
The free printable template makes cutting out the face pieces much easier — especially for younger kids. You just print, trace onto construction paper, and cut. No freehand drawing required! Download it below.
What age is this craft best for?
This works great for kids ages 4 and up. Younger kids will need help with cutting, but they can do all the gluing and assembling. Older kids can handle the whole thing independently.

Plan for about 20–30 minutes, plus drying time for the brown paint. Pro tip: paint the plate first and let it dry while you cut out all the template pieces. Then assembly goes super fast.
