What Is a Unicorn Cake?
A unicorn cake is a decorated cake designed to look like a unicorn — complete with a golden horn, sweet little ears, a flowing mane, and the cutest unicorn eyes you’ve ever seen. They’re hugely popular for birthday parties and special occasions. And you know what? They look way more impressive than they actually are to make. That’s our kind of cake around here. 😄
The version we’re making today is a carved unicorn shape from a single round cake. No stacking. No complicated decorating. Just one pan, a sharp knife, and some simple magic.

Bake and Cool Your Cake
Start by preparing your box mix according to the package directions in a large bowl. Pour the cake batter into a round baking dish and bake as directed. Once it’s done, let the cake cool completely on a wire rack before moving on. Warm cake plus frosting equals a melty disaster, trust me.
Room temperature is what you’re going for here. If you’re short on time, pop the cake in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to speed things up.
Shape the Unicorn
Here comes the fun part! Once the cake has cooled, grab a sharp knife and carefully cut a wedge from one side of the round cake. Then cut that wedge into two pieces. Shape one piece into a unicorn horn and the other into a unicorn ear. The horn should be larger, and the ear should be smaller. Clever, right? 🦄
Arrange the main cake body along with the horn and ear on a cake board or serving platter to form your unicorn shape.

Frost and Decorate
Spread white frosting over the entire cake — the body, ear, and horn. An offset spatula makes this super smooth, but a butter knife works just as well. Cover everything evenly.
Next, press the yellow sprinkles into the horn to create that golden-horn look. ✨ Then arrange rainbow marshmallows along the top of the cake to create the unicorn’s colorful mane. Play with the color scheme however you like — the vibrant colors always look so pretty!
Finally, use the black icing tube to draw on sweet unicorn eyes and a little smile. Step back. Admire your work. You just made that. 🎉

Where to Take or Use This Cake
This easy unicorn cake is perfect for so many occasions! Here are a few ideas:
- Birthday parties — every little girl (and boy!) deserves a magical birthday cake at her birthday party
- Baby showers — a rainbow unicorn cake fits a pastel theme beautifully
- School celebrations — it travels great on a cake board
- Just because — honestly, no special occasion needed. Any Tuesday works.

Variations to Try
Want to mix things up a little bit? Try these fun swaps:
- Colorful Cake with Rainbow inside — use a white box mix and stir food dyes into the cake batter in small bowls for a colorful rainbow cake surprise when you cut into it! Layer the different colors in the baking pan and swirl with a knife.
- Buttercream frosting — swap store-bought white frosting for a homemade buttercream for an even more delicious cake.
- Edible glitter — dust the mane and horn with edible glitter for next-level sparkle ✨.
- Piping bag upgrade — use a star tip and piping bag to pipe colored buttercream swirls for a more textured unicorn mane if you’re feeling fancy.

Can You Make This Cake Ahead?
Absolutely! Here’s how to plan ahead:
Make ahead: Bake and frost the cake up to one day in advance. Add the marshmallow mane and black icing details the day you’re serving it for the freshest look.

Storage: Cover the finished cake loosely and store at room temperature for up to two days. For longer storage, place it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.
Freezing: Bake the plain cake, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and freeze for up to one month. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then decorate the next day!

Common Unicorn Cake Questions
Do I have to use a box mix?
Nope! But a box mix seriously makes this so much faster. When life is busy, easy is the move. No shame here. 😄 To make my boxed cake mix taste even better, I’ll add an additional large egg, swap the oil for melted butter, and swap the water for milk!
What if I can’t find rainbow marshmallows?
Regular mini marshmallows work great! You can also use colorful candies for a similar look.

Do I need special tools?
Not at all. A sharp knife, a round baking dish, and a basic spreading tool are all you need. Simple as that. ✅
What if my frosting looks messy?
Good news — the marshmallow mane hides a lot! Just pile those marshmallows on, and nobody will notice. Or use a knife or offset spatula to smooth out frosting as you go.
