Ingredients

  • 1 French baguette sliced (for the flagpole)
  • Fresh mozzarella about 8 oz, sliced into rounds and a few squares
  • 4-5 medium tomatoes sliced
  • 1 small can of sliced black olives drained
  • Fresh basil leaves a handful
  • Fresh cracked black pepper to taste
  • Balsamic vinegar for dipping

Instructions

  • Slice the bread into ½-inch thick pieces. Line them vertically on the left side of your serving platter. This will look like the flagpole.
  • Add the olives. In the upper-left corner of the platter, arrange the olives in a square or rectangle. This represents the blue field on the flag.
  • Create the stripes. Alternate rows of sliced tomatoes and sliced mozzarella across the rest of the platter, forming red and white stripes. Aim for 3–4 rows of each.
  • Make mozzarella stars. Slice a few pieces of mozzarella into small squares or use a small star-shaped cutter if you have one. Place them on top of the olives for stars.
  • Decorate with basil. Lay the fresh basil leaves below the flag to resemble grass. This adds a pop of green and a burst of flavor.
  • Add flavor. Crack some black pepper over the top.
  • Serve with balsamic vinegar. Pour the balsamic glaze into a small dipping bowl and place it nearby.
