Servings: 6
- 1 French baguette sliced (for the flagpole)
- Fresh mozzarella about 8 oz, sliced into rounds and a few squares
- 4-5 medium tomatoes sliced
- 1 small can of sliced black olives drained
- Fresh basil leaves a handful
- Fresh cracked black pepper to taste
- Balsamic vinegar for dipping
Slice the bread into ½-inch thick pieces. Line them vertically on the left side of your serving platter. This will look like the flagpole.
Add the olives. In the upper-left corner of the platter, arrange the olives in a square or rectangle. This represents the blue field on the flag.
Create the stripes. Alternate rows of sliced tomatoes and sliced mozzarella across the rest of the platter, forming red and white stripes. Aim for 3–4 rows of each.
Make mozzarella stars. Slice a few pieces of mozzarella into small squares or use a small star-shaped cutter if you have one. Place them on top of the olives for stars.
Decorate with basil. Lay the fresh basil leaves below the flag to resemble grass. This adds a pop of green and a burst of flavor.
Add flavor. Crack some black pepper over the top.
Serve with balsamic vinegar. Pour the balsamic glaze into a small dipping bowl and place it nearby.
