Make rainbow suncatchers using a free printable template. This easy kids craft is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day & busy days when you want cute window decor.

A Rainbow suncatcher craft is one of those crafts that look fancy but secretly takes very little effort, you know. They bring instant color to your windows and feel like pure happiness on a sunny day. Best part? You can make them with supplies you probably already have at home. 🙌
If you are a busy parent or teacher who loves easy wins, this one is for you. I’m a mom of two, and I’m always looking for ways to make ordinary afternoons feel special without turning my kitchen into a glitter disaster. This craft checks all the boxes.

What is a rainbow suncatcher craft?
A rainbow suncatcher is a simple window art project made with tissue paper and contact paper. When sunlight shines through, the colors glow and instantly brighten the room. It feels a little magical, especially for kids.
This type of kids’ craft works well for toddlers, preschoolers, and older kids too. You can help with the cutting, and they handle the fun part. It’s also a great way to sneak in fine motor skills practice without anyone realizing it. That’s a parenting win if you ask me.

Why you’ll love this idea
First, it is quick. You can set this up in minutes, which matters on busy days. There is no drying time, no paint spills, and no complicated steps. That makes it perfect for after school or a quiet weekend morning.
Second, it uses simple materials. Tissue paper, construction paper, and contact paper (even packing tape works in a pinch) do all the heavy lifting. Because of that, it’s budget-friendly and stress-free. You don’t need to run to the store or order anything fancy.
Even better, kids stay engaged. They love choosing colors and sticking them down. Meanwhile, you get a little peace and a cute piece of window art at the end. Everybody wins. 😄

Why this craft works for St. Patrick’s Day
Rainbows and St. Patrick’s Day go together like peanut butter and jelly. 🍀 This craft fits perfectly with leprechauns, gold, and all the green fun. It’s a great St. Patrick’s Day craft when you want something festive but not over-the-top.
That said, don’t box it into one holiday. This is also a fun spring craft, a weather unit activity, or an easy homeschool art project. Rainbows show up in so many themes, which means you’ll reuse this idea again and again.

How to Make Rainbow Suncatchers Step-by-Step
Start by downloading and printing the rainbow template. You’ll enter your email address in the dark green download box at the end of the post. This helps me keep creating free printables for busy moms like you. 💛
Next, cut the rainbow template out of white construction paper. Then cut small squares from blue tissue paper for the clouds. After that, cut thin strips of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple tissue paper.

Attach contact paper to the back of the rainbow template. Place it sticky-side up on your table. Let your child stick the tissue paper pieces onto the clouds and rainbow sections until the whole template is covered.

If you want extra durability, add another layer of contact paper on top to seal everything in. Trim off any extra contact paper around the edges. Finally, hang it in a sunny window and enjoy the glow. ✨

How to use this craft at home or in the classroom
These suncatchers make adorable window decorations. Hang them in the kitchen, playroom, or bedroom window where the sun can shine through. The colors really pop in the afternoon light.
They also work well for classroom activities or group settings. Because the steps are simple, kids can work mostly independently. Teachers and parents love that part. This craft also pairs nicely with books about colors, weather, or kindness.

Variations to try
You can switch up the colors for different seasons or themes. Pastels work beautifully for spring, while bold colors pop in summer.
Try adding glitter tissue paper for extra sparkle. Just a little goes a long way. You can also turn this into a heart or shamrock shape for holidays.
Older kids might enjoy designing their own patterns instead of using the template. That adds creativity while still keeping the project simple.

Common questions about rainbow suncatchers
What age is this craft best for?
This works well for toddlers with help and preschool through elementary kids independently. Adjust cutting based on age.
Do I need contact paper?
Contact paper works best, but clear packing tape can work in a pinch. It just takes longer to cover the area. To do this, lay out a piece of wax paper. Place cut out template on top, then cover with strips of tape. Remove from wax paper and turn over to add tissue paper.
How long do they last?
They can last several weeks in a window. Direct sunlight may fade the tissue paper over time, which is totally normal.
