The Fourth of July is one of those holidays that sneaks up fast. One minute it’s Memorial Day, and the next, you’re scrambling for something to keep the kids busy while you prep the food and wait for it to get dark enough for fireworks. Sound familiar? I’ve been there a few times. That’s why I made this free 4th of July I Spy printable — a simple, fun activity that keeps little hands busy and actually gets kids excited about the holiday.

What Is This Free Printable?
This is a search-and-find activity sheet packed with fun patriotic items. Kids scan the page to find hidden July 4th images, count how many of each item they spot, and record their answers in the box next to each image at the bottom of the page.
It comes in two versions. The full color version is ready to use right away — great for a quick grab-and-go activity. The second version is a color-as-you-go sheet where kids find each item, count it, AND color it in as they record their totals. Plus, it includes an answer key so there’s no arguing over who counted right. (You’re welcome. 😄)

Why You’ll Love This Idea
It’s Simple, but It Does a Lot
First, this activity works harder than it looks. Kids are counting, searching, recording, and in the coloring version, working on fine motor skills too. It feels like play, but you know there’s real learning happening. That’s the sweet spot for busy parents who want activities that are both fun and worthwhile.
It also keeps kids genuinely focused. The hunt-and-count format gives kids a clear goal to work toward on each page. They’re not just coloring aimlessly — they’re on a mission. And kids on a mission are kids who aren’t asking “when do the fireworks start?” every five minutes.
It Works for a Wide Range of Ages
Second, this printable is flexible enough to use with different ages at the same time. Younger kids can focus on finding and coloring the patriotic symbols. Older kids can take on the full challenge of finding, counting, and recording every item accurately. You can hand it to a five-year-old and a nine-year-old at the same table, and both of them will be happily busy. That, my friend, is a holiday win. 🙌

How to Use the 4th of July I Spy Printable
Using this printable is genuinely easy — which is kind of the whole point. To download, head to the bottom of this post and enter your name and email address in the dark green download box. The PDF file will be sent directly to your inbox.
Print the version that works best for your crew. If you want something bright and ready to go, print the full color version. If you want kids more engaged and the activity to last longer, go with the count-and-color version. Either way, just hand it over with a pencil or some crayons and let them get to work.
Kids search the sheet for all the patriotic images — things like flags, stars, fireworks, and other festive Independence Day symbols. When they find an image, they count how many times it appears on the page and write the number in the recording box. Once they think they’re done, they can check their answers with the included answer key. It’s self-contained and easy for kids to use on their own, which means less hand-holding for you. 🎉
For the coloring version, kids also color in each item as they count it. It slows the activity down in the best way — more time for them, more breathing room for you.

Fun Ways to Use This Printable 🎆
This activity is more versatile than you might expect. Here are some great ways to use it:
- Holiday party activity station: Set it out on a table with crayons and let kids work on it between games and food.
- Waiting for fireworks: It’s the perfect way to fill that long stretch of time before it gets dark enough for the show to start.
- Road trip or travel entertainment: Print a few copies and tuck them in a bag for the drive to your celebration.
- Classroom or daycare: Teachers, this one’s for you too. It makes a great early July activity for the whole group.
- Quiet morning activity: Kids up early and full of holiday energy? This buys you a peaceful few minutes to enjoy your breakfast. You deserve it.

Variations for Using the Printable
Make It a Friendly Competition
Turn it into a game by seeing who can find and correctly count all the items first. Set a small prize — a popsicle, a sticker, or first dibs on dessert. Kids go all in when there’s something fun on the line.
Use Both Versions Together
Print the color version for younger kids and the full color version for older ones, or vice versa. Using both versions together is also a fun way to compare answers at the end and see who found the most items. It turns a solo activity into a group moment, which is sweet, you know?
Add It to a Holiday Busy Bag
Pair this printable with a few other simple activities — a word search, a scavenger hunt, a dot-to-dot, some stickers — and create a little 4th of July busy bag. It’s great for travel, parties, or just keeping the peace on a long holiday weekend.

Common Questions About this Printable
What age is this best for? This works well for kids roughly ages 4–10. Younger kids will enjoy finding and coloring the pictures. Older kids can handle the full count-and-record challenge on their own.
Do I need special paper or ink? Nope! Regular printer paper works just fine. Cardstock gives you a sturdier sheet if you want it to hold up longer, but it’s totally optional.
What patriotic items are on the sheet? The sheet features a fun mix of festive July 4th images like stars, flags, fireworks, and other patriotic symbols for kids to hunt down and count.
Can I use this for a classroom or group? Absolutely! This is a personal use printable, so feel free to print as many copies as you need for your own family, classroom, or party. Please do not share the digital files.
Is the answer key included? Yes! The answer key is included so kids (and parents 😄) can check their work when they’re done.
