Did you see our sneak peak of this cute Valentine dessert plate on my Instagram stories the other day? If not go on over to follow The Benson Street on Instagram for more sneak peaks and goodness. I’ve been seeing such cute dessert boards around Pinterest and Instagram and knew my kids would love it and I would love to create it, so we did it and it was a lot of fun and so cute!

What to include on a dessert board:

The options are endless for what to include on your dessert board, but I wanted to include some ideas for your brainstorming, plus what I included on my dessert board.

  • chocolate covered pretzels
  • gummy bears
  • gumdrops
  • chocolates
  • small cookies
  • any heart shaped candy
  • jelly beans
  • conversation hearts
  • chocolate covered strawberries
  • chocolate covered raspberries
  • any heart shaped candies or gummies
  • M&M’s
  • Hershey’s Kisses
  • rice crispies cut out with a heart cookie cutter
  • brownies cut out with a heart cookie cutter
  • malted milk balls

The options are endless and so easy to customize to what you and your family love. I found a lot of these things at a local grocery store with a bulk food section. And if you want this to be really easy or you are short on time, grab it all at the store or only make one item homemade!

My other tip is to use up any Christmas candy that is red or works with the Valentine color scheme, especially if you want to keep your dessert plate on a budget. This doesn’t have to be expensive. Or use all homemade treats.

How to arrange a dessert plate

  1. Start with a plate (size depending on how many you plan to feed) and if you want a couple of small bowls to hold small items. I found this cute heart shaped plate at Target, as well as the cute little heart shaped baking cups to hold the other little pieces of candy.
  2. Start by filling the edges of the plate. I started with the top and then moved around to the bottom. The edges are great for cookies or other things that can kind of create a place to hold the other items in.
  3. Fill in the middle. Try to keep colors contrasting (or reds not right by reds, and milk chocolates not right next to other milk chocolates or other brown foods) and add a couple of small bowls with tiny candies to hold make them easier to grab and keep together.
  4. Add any left over candies to other dishes around the plate if you want a whole Valentine Dessert spread!
  5. Add a set of tongs or small serving spoon or fork to help get the desserts. And enjoy!

See super easy, doable, and adds a fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, plus the kids will love it, especially if you pick one candy or treat you know each person loves and incorporate it into the plate.

And if you want to go the extra mile, I added a tea towel and some cute wooden hearts that are actually place card holders!

And now I’m sure you want to see how much the kids loved this, right??? They were pretty excited! I let them enjoy it for a bit, but they for sure didn’t get to eat all of that! We will get it all back out again and share with some family or friends closer to Valentine’s Day.

This next one isn’t a great picture, but it is so cute that I had to share! Got to love when they are sharing and getting along.
