Thankful Garland Activity

Are the leaves starting to fall yet? Is it getting a little crisp in the mornings? I am here to wish you a happy fall! It just seems like this season is flying by. Before we know it Halloween will be here and it will be time to turn our thoughts to Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving. First of all, great food. Second of all, a time to recognize all the blessings in our lives. I want to share a unique way to highlight all those blessings with a Thankful Garland Activity.

To create this easy garland you will need:

  • 15 paper cut out hexagons (or circles, squares, leaves, etc.)
  • A sewing machine or another way to connect shapes
  • Colored pencils, markers or pens

I used hexagons in two colors. A light tan and orange accent color. I cut out all my hexagons using my Sizzix, but any die cutting machine will work. Or trace shapes and cut out by hand.

Sew the shapes together in a line using a straight stitch. Leave some thread at each end. Or for the new sew method, pin the shapes together using brads, tape or any other creative way you can think of to attach the shapes together.

Hang the garland somewhere special. In a place where the whole family can see it often. I hung mine in our front room near the entry way.

For a week or two before Thanksgiving or all throughout November, invite the family to write things they are thankful for on the hexagons. There are plenty of shapes and more than one thing can fit on a hexagon. Use different colored color pencils for a more colorful fall look.

By the time Thanksgiving arrives the garland should be full. Read the garland together before Thanksgiving dinner or just let everyone take a moment to see what everyone has written.

The garland is easy to save to remember all the great blessings of the year.
