Fall Pumpkin Wreath

My front door has been in need of some new fall cheer. I fell in love with this fabric and Joann’s and had to make something fallish. I love this soft back pumpkin wreath. It does require sewing, but it is pretty easy!

Here is what you will need:

• 1/4 a yard of three different coordinating fabrics and 3/4 a yard of another coordinating fabric
• scrap fabric for stem
• stuffing
• burlap
• jute
• yarn
• newspaper for pattern making

Start by creating your pattern. I used a big round pillow to make the edges. Start and trace one of the sides and then do the other side. I wanted mine not completely round, so I spread out the sides a little bit. Then draw two seams down the middle.

Just have fun with it. You don’t have to be an artist to make it look good. It sometimes helps to look at a real pumpkin.

Cut out the pattern and pin to the fabric (the piece that is 3/4 a yard). Cut out the back of the pumpkin. 

Cut the pumpkin sections apart and pin one to each of the coordinating fabric and cut out the pieces of fabric.

Pin the sections together in the order that they were when you drew the pumpkin. I numbered mine so I wouldn’t get confused.

Sew the sections together using a straight stitch on the back side, so the seams aren’t on the front.

The front should look like this when all sewn together.

Take the front and back sides and put right sides together.

Cut out a stem shape pattern. Pin to scrap fabric for the stem. Fold it in half and pin the pattern to the wrong side. Remove the pattern and pin back together. Sew around the stem except leave the bottom open to stuff the stem.

Stuff the stem up nice and firm.

Sneak the stem into the pumpkin. Slip it in so that when it is turned right side out it will stand up. Pin it in really good.

Sew around the pumpkin and leave on of the sides of the pumpkin open to turn inside out.

Clip around the corners. This will make it lie flat when it is turned inside out. turn the pumpkin inside out.

Start stuffing the pumpkin. Each section will be stuffed and then sewn. When the stuffing is all packed into the first section, pin it to sew on the seam.

Sew right along the seam and it will come out looking like this. Then stuff the next section and repeat.

When it is to the last section, fold in the un-sewn edges. Pin and use a whip stitch to sew shut the hole. Watch a video about the whip stitch here.

Just use nice small stitches and sew the opening up.

The pumpkin is finished. Now on to the burlap banner. I cut 2 x 3 inch rectangles (folded in half, should measure to the 2 x3). Use a stencil or cut one out on your cutting machine and dab on paint.

Glue the pendants onto a piece of twine and tie around the pumpkin at an angle.

Use yarn to create a loop to hang the wreath. Just tie a knot and slip it into the stem.

Hang it on your door and enjoy. It is so festive for fall.

It could even work as a pillow with extra stuffing.
