Before you go check out these other gorgeous black and white projects, here is my tutorial for this upcycled black and white file cabinet.
What you need:
- Spray Paint (I used a white for the file cabinet and black for the stenciling)
- Wrapping paper
- Scrapbook paper for handles
Here is what my file cabinet looked like before painting. It was a creamy tan color and was rusted in some places. I bought it at a thrift store for cheap. I must be a nerd because I love old file cabinets. They are just so cute but industrial because they are made of metal. I wanted to make this one over for storage in my garage.
Here is a more up close picture. You can see some of the rust on the drawers.
Clean of the old file cabinet as best you can. I just wiped mine out with warm soapy water. Let it dry.
Remove the drawers and spray they outside of the file cabinet.
Then spray the front of the drawers. I didn’t spray the inside of the drawers, but you could. Just depends on what you will be using if for.
After the base coat dried, I used a stencil to up this awesome distressed diamond checkerboard type look on two of the drawers. Make sure to tape off any where that you want to stay white.
Spray the stencil with the other color of paint. Remove Stencil and let the paint dry.
Love this stencil! It is awesome that it is distressed!
On the other two drawers I used number stencils. Again make sure any area to not be painted is taped off or covered with paper or drop cloths.
Spray the number and then remove the stencil and let dry.
I lined my drawers with wrapping paper. Measure drawers and then fold the edges like wrapping a present and fit into the bottom of the drawers.
I wanted a small pop of color in the handles of the file cabinet. They way the pull handles were shaped there was a perfect spot to line with scrapbook paper.
Insert the paper into the handles. Could run through a sticker maker or tap on the back to ensure that the paper lined handles stay in place.
I love how it turned out and I can’t wait to use it to keep my garage storage organized. I have tools and gloves and a bunch of stuff just sitting on shelves and I would love to get it organized and put away in this file cabinet upcycle.
The spray paint covers well and brings new life to an old vintage file cabinet.
What old things do you love? Are you a file cabinet nerd like me or what do you love?
